10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects

outdoor spring cleaning

Spring cleaning is not exciting for a lot of us. But it is important. As the winter come to an end and we start looking forward to spring and warm weather, something within us encourages us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve collected throughout the winter.

But who says spring cleaning is only for the interior of a home?
The exterior of your home could use a little tidying up after a cold, wet winter, too!

It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning

Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will improve the appearance of your home in Charleston, and, even more important, will provide much-needed maintenance and upkeep that will save money in years ahead.

1. Gutter Cleaning

Spring is the ideal time to clean your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris collect during the fall and winter. Pollen is at its highest during the spring, making a big mess in your gutters if they aren’t cleaned.

Plus, pests and critters are searching for places to build homes during spring, so having your gutters cleaned will help prevent an infestation in your home.

Gutter cleaning consists of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, stains and returning them to a nice appearance.

2. Window Cleaning

Exterior window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows will not cause you much of a headache, but any second and third floor windows are trickier to reach.

Cleaning windows by hand is a tiring chore, and will require a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the recommended solution to get the panes and the outer frame clean.

3. Pressure Washing

You do not want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty home. That means you will want to pressure wash your home too!

Pressure washing is fast, effective and affordable. You can pressure clean your home, patio furniture, patios, porches and walkways with not much effort. It will remove dirt and mud so they won’t permanently stain your home, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.

4. Driveway Cleaning

Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning may seem silly since you will still be driving on it, but actually, a clean, well-cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.

A professional pressure washing service can do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it is concrete, asphalt, brick or some other material. Also, consider adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really make it stand out!

5. Patio Cleaning

Your home’s patio probably gets the most use throughout the summer, so it’s easy to overlook it during the winter when you aren’t doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio might be in rough shape the first time you step onto it in the spring.

Detergent and water – and a little muscle – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or mildew, you might need to consider a more serious option, like power washing, to ensure that friends and family can safely enjoy your patio all summer long.

6. Roof Cleaning

Algae and moss are common home roof problems in Charleston. While you are cleaning the exterior of your home, it is an excellent time to pressure clean your home’s roof as well, but you will need to use a different process than what you use for most of your home’s exterior.

If you start to notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the reason. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These contaminants cannot be scrubbed off shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your home. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your home’s roof.

The best method for roof cleaning is to spray the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water mixture and then leave it sit. This mixture will eliminate any organisms on your home’s roof without lowering its lifespan.

7. Clean up the Front

The front of your home is going to be what most people see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Coming home to a well-maintained exterior will instantly improve your day, and will motivate you to spend more time outdoors.

You can clean your front porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Clean cobwebs and dirt off of the front door, and consider painting it a new color for a really bright look! Clean unnoticed areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.

8. Organize Garden Tools

You’ll soon be spending much more time outside, so spring is a great chance to organize whatever you will need for outdoor work.

Yard tools as well as pool care equipment need to all have a specific place outside your home – a place that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Spending the time to organize in the spring allows you to enjoy the exterior of your home so much more throughout the time of year when you spend the most time outdoors.

9. Lawn Care & Landscaping

Your yard, trees and bushes can make a major impact on the look of your home.

Remove weeds near your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up places where you will be planting later on and brush off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make lawn maintenance easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all the bushes too.

10. Clean the Grill

After being unused for several months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.

Wipe it down to remove leftover ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber or grill brush (so you don’t leave behind particles that can sometimes get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
